HISTORY & LAND

The land is breathtaking…

Nestled on a high, wide ridge overlooking Belews Lake, the views of the lake are serenely magical. But the hardwood forests and natural clear creeks have their own allure, full of life and brimming with a diversity of native plants, fish, turtles, and birds. The historic Atlantic & Yadkin railroad ran through the property beginning in the 1880s on its scenic route from Greensboro up to the Yadkin Valley — the full line ran from Wilmington up to Mount Airy. The rails have been removed, but some of the trestles are preserved at ColdWater Springs Creek (see photo above), and the historic railroad bed — now a wide, soft path of grass and fallen leaves bordered by woodlands — still exists as ColdWater Greenway.

THE LAKE

“A gem of a lake”…

Belews Lake became part of our history in 1973. One of the largest manmade reservoirs in North Carolina at nearly 4,000 acres of surface area with 88 miles of shoreline, it was created as a cooling basin for Duke Energy’s Belews Creek Steam Station using the water flow from Belews Creek and building a dam at the northern end. Through efforts in the 1980s at establishing a healthy lake ecosystem, Belews Lake is now one of the cleanest lakes in North Carolina, with an abundance of healthy and diverse fish populations. Carolina Sportsman recently named Belews as “lake of the month” and described it as one of North Carolina’s “unknown treasures.” Duke Energy continues to pursue environmental quality, and the Steam Station is now dual-fuel and in the process of a gradual conversion to all natural gas. We anticipate Belews Lake will offer clear waters, great fishing, and endless watersport opportunities for many years into the future.
